International students at post-secondary colleges and universities in the United States are required to take a minimum of 12 credits each fall and spring term to maintain their visa status. Exceptions are made only for students in their final semester who need fewer than 12 credits to complete their program. Students are often able to take classes during summer and winter terms, which have no minimum credit requirements. Of the 12 credits that international students are required to take during fall and spring semesters, 9 credits (3 classes) must be in person; only 3 credits (1 class) can be delivered through online instruction.
